National funded RTD Projects
CMBR - Centre for the study and sustainable exploitation of Marine Biological Resources (GSRT 2017-2020)
CMBR is an integrative large-scale Greek Research Infrastructure (RI) of the National Roadmap for RI’s, dedicated to the advancement of Blue Growth through the study and sustainable exploitation of marine biological resources in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is coordinated by the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture (IMBBC), Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) and integrates world-class facilities of high-caliber research institutes of Crete and the rest of Greece. It is based on the participation of IMBBC /HCMR in the European RI (ESFRI) “European Marine Biological Resource Centre” (EMBRC). MEL is participating in WP's 1.3 (Task 1.8) and 2.3 (Task 2.7) wich focus on the upgrading of research planktonic and benthic mesoscosms. |

Carrying Capacity: Impact of aquaculture on the marine environment and adaptation of fish farming production to the environmental characteristics of the receiving marine ecosystems (GSRT; 2006-2007)
The Greek authority (then Ministry for Agriculture, now Ministry for Maritime Policy) responsible for the regulation of aquaculture had decided in 2004 to update the regulation for fish farming imposing different maximum levels of production to farms located at different farming sites. To this end, the MEL team was commissioned to prepare a proposal for the new policy taking into account the existing knowledge/information regarding the environmental interactions of Aquaculture in Greek coastal as well as all other relevant information from the scientific literature.
